As you may be aware, people are living longer. This could be due to any number of reasons, but what we do know for certain is being alive requires an ongoing need for food, shelter, and some level of financial security.
There have been too many stories in the news and on social media where individuals who this country should be honoring as beacons of knowledge and experience, are finding themselves afraid to simply wake up every day or check the mail because they don't have enough money to pay their bills, afford medication that could be the difference between life and death, or even buy food. They find themselves walking on eggshells on a daily basis. It is also a reality that a considerable number of our seniors have never received training in financial literacy - as what is still woefully lacking in the curricula of the American educational system - so they only know how to live from paycheck to paycheck. While this method of survival may have worked many years ago and was a viable path toward retiring, today's economy dictates one think differently about money and how much will be needed to at least live comfortably in the retirement years. Indeed, for many elderly, they were taught growing up to go to school, get a good job, work 30 years, then retire off their pension and social security. (Well, we all know what's happening to the system of social security.) Nowadays, our elderly are having to work much longer than 30 years, some even needing two and three jobs to simply make ends meet. The problem is many companies and organizations are not hiring seniors but opting to go with younger professionals who they can pay less. This is a great loss of human capital in so many fields. From science and technology to the arts and education, when we leave this precious source of wisdom and experience untapped, everyone loses out.
We want to change this pattern of disregard and align seniors with career and job opportunities that will not only be financially and personally fulfilling, but long-lasting as well. Career and job opportunities that will restore some sense of financial security and allow them to live out their golden years with peace of mind.
